Silver Creek adds kindergarten

A spike in kindergarten enrollment led the Silver Creek School District to add a sixth section for new students.

During the regular meeting of the Board of Education on Wednesday, board members gave retroactive approval to hire a new teacher. Enrollment was 15 students more than predicted for kindergarten. The total enrollment for that grade is 100 students.

School Superintendent David O'Rourke said that the increase was a surprise and that he is not sure if it is a spike for children of that age or if there Tory burch are more families with school-age children in the district.

O'Rourke said that the school has not seen an increase in its universal prekindergarten program, but since the program has a waiting list and only accepts a set number each year, future enrollments are difficult to determine.

O'Rourke said the increased number will have to be followed closely because it may impact future grades at the school.

In other matters, the board heard that new computer software was used to change school bus routes.

As a result, one route was eliminated and is expected to produce a savings for the district.

The school year got under way Tuesday.

Renovations at the school are nearly complete. Some restrooms, which have not been completed, are expected to be in service by the end of the week.
