Silver spoon's 340 years old

COLLECTIBLES BY CHARLES HANSON ON a recent visit to a house in Burton, Replica Rolex Watches I was pleased to collect for sale a rare silver spoon, hallmarked for London and dated to around 1670 - only four years after the "Great Fire".

The English hallmarking system began in the 13th Century and today we are able to identify the maker, year and place of manufacture, and the sterling mark to confirm the metal is 92.5 per cent sterling silver.

This spoon dates to the reign of Charles II (1660-85) and is a trefid spoon. Hallmarked with a leopard's head to signify London and a date code, the spoon is a rare survivor.

For anyone wishing to ac-quire silver for investment and enjoyment, I advise always buy items with clear hallmarks.

Be careful when you clean silver since it is very easy to rub away the markings.

The silver spoon will be consigned to Hanson's summer auction on August 26 at The Mackworth Hotel and is expected to realise Pounds 400 to Pounds 500.
