Ton of fun on the bill to mark

A POPULAR Tamworth Working Men's Club is to celebrate 100 years of history this weekend.

Birchmoor WMC in New Street is holding a series of events both on Saturday, July 17 and Sunday to mark the milestone, including football tournaments, barbecues and live music. The club was formed in June 1910 by miners from Birchmoor Colliery, who played football on a pitch which is still in use today.

A committee was formed and in October 1910 the premises were purchased. It had previously been a bakers and a butchers.

Birchmoor Colliery, which was also known as Cockspur Colliery, was open from 1860 until 1927 and many of its workers were members of Birchmoor WMC.

Teresa Street, club treasurer, said: "We've organised a fun weekend packed with all sorts of entertainment. We're offering wholesale lingerie free entry, even to non-members, to try and support our village and our chosen charities."

She added: "We're also presenting a bouquet to the village's oldest living resident, Elsie Betteridge, who will be 97 in September.

"Mrs Betteridge is housebound, so the flowers will be taken to her at home."

Yet Elsie still lives independently in the village, with the help of carers, family and friends.

This weekend's events are as followed: Saturday, July 17 - Polesworth Swifts Under-10s football tournament from 10am until 1pm.

Bibbledy Bob Children's Entertainer and free face painting 1pm until 3pm.

Horse Racing Fun 4pm until 6pm and vocalist and comedian Nipper Thomas is on from 8pm.

A barbecue will also run from 12pm.

On Sunday, July 18 a fancy dress football match will take place between Birchmoor United and Birchmoor members, kick off 10.30am.

Vocalist Mickey Dean is on from 1pm until 2pm and female vocalist Danielle Barker is set to perform from 3pm until 4pm.

Other events running throughout the day include fun and games, balloon animals, raffles and quizzes.

Money raised will be split between the WMC's two charities - Marie Curie Cancer Care and Help for Heroes.
