Oh, he's going to Barbados

HE MAY be donating his multi-million-pound earnings from his new biography to a good cause - but it seems Tony Blair and his wife Cherie still have enough money for a new home in the Caribbean.

The couple are house-hunting in Barbados for a villa to add to their already formidable property empire, The Sunday Telegraph understands. They have viewed properties with the intention of buying a holiday home to which they could eventually retire.

The Blairs are believed to have been looking for a house on the former British colony, which has long been their favoured holiday destination, for at least three months. According to sources, hundreds of digital photographs of for-sale properties have been emailed to the couple.

A senior representative from one of the main estate agents said: "Tony has a lot of friends on the island and has looked at property but he has not purchased anything yet to the best of our knowledge."

A leading solicitor on the island said she expected the Blairs to buy a property through a company - rather than in their own names - in an attempt to disguise the purchase for security and privacy reasons.

A new villa on the island would be the Blairs' eighth property: it was disclosed this weekend that the former prime minister and his wife have spent Pounds 975,000 on a maisonette in west London for their only daughter, Kathryn, 22, a student, bringing the family's portfolio to seven homes worth up to Pounds 15million.

The couple are said to be open minded about whether they buy an existing house in Barbados or whether they buy a plot with planning permission for a new build.

A secluded six-bedroom villa with a swimming pool would cost about $6.2million (Pounds 4 million), although Mr Blair is also believed to be keen to have a tennis court so he can play his favourite sport on his own land.

One of the locations the couple are said to favour is Apes Hill, where some 200 upmarket homes are being built on prime land about 1,000ft above sea level. Plots alone range wholesale lingerie in cost from $400,000 (Pounds 258,000) to $10 million (Pounds 6.4million) - before a brick has been laid.

In Britain, the Blairs' main homes are a Pounds 4.5million property near Hyde Park, bought for Pounds 3.7million in 2004, and a country house in Buckinghamshire, formerly owned by the actor Sir John Gielgud, now worth an estimated Pounds 6million and bought in 2008 for Pounds 5.75million. Including their latest purchase for their daughter, they have five other properties, some bought for their other children.

Mr Blair has had several conversations with Barbadians in which he has spoken of his fondness for the island and his hopes of buying a property there. "He told me he is a great admirer of our state education system and he would have liked his [four] children to have gone to school in Barbados," said one islander, who has become friendly with the former prime minister during his visits to Barbados.

Celebrities who own or have owned property on the island include Sir Cliff Richard, Oprah Winfrey, Gary Lineker and the golfer Ian Woosnam. Sir Cliff let Mr Blair stay at his six-bedroom villa on the Sugar Hill estate, situated close to the island's exclusive west coast, for three summers while the Labour politician was still prime minister.

Oh, What Will I Do Without Tho

Byline: by Roy Hattersley

WE KNOW all good things must come to an end. But some of us had hoped fate would make an exception for Last of The Summer wine.

Its record life span -- 31 series spread over 37 years -- was, in itself, enough to make swiss army brand watch it seem as indestructible as the limestone landscape in which it was filmed.

And the idea it might go on for ever was encouraged by its consistent quality. Devotees of the series were also persuaded to believe in the immortality of its characters.

Last of The Summer wine, after all, was the story of a band of elderly Peter Pans who resolutely refused to grow up. now, however, it really is over. Compo, Clegg and nora Batty have passed into history.

Last night, after the last ever episode, we were left to contemplate, perhaps for the first time, what that evocative title really meant.

The programme was meant to entertain and we should not be too serious or solemn about its meanings and messages. But at its heart was a joyous idea: that age should never prevent life from being fun. we grow old. But we do not have to become bored or boring.

The poet Andrew Marvell made the same point 400 years ago: 'Thus, though we cannot make our sun stand still, yet we will make him run.' And so they did -- all the characters which Roy Clarke, the writer from start to finish, created to enthral the Sunday audiences which, at the peak of the series' popularity, numamorous. bered more than 20 million.

Only norman Clegg, played by Peter Sallis, was a genuine adult -- in his heart and mind, as well as on the evidence of his birth certificate. As the calm and careful Clegg -- rarely seen without his cardigan and cap -- he was always the fulcrum of the story. The elderly schoolboys he called his friends and confederates revolved around him.

Clegg's world-weary tolerance of their irresponsibility emphasised the mindless pleasure they found in simple things and the importance of making the most of every minute.

When the series began, Clegg's greatest friend was Compo. It was an attraction of opposites. Clegg was neat, well-organised and polite. Compo -- played by Bill owen until he died -- was dirty, dishevelled and disrespectful.

His defining characteris-t i c (apart from his need for a good bath and wearing clothes that should have been in an incinerator) was his infatuation with nora Batty.

She was the formidable and house-proud widow who became as famous for her wrinkled stockings as for the ferocity with which she repulsed the indomitable Compo's amorous advances.

One of the most memorable moments in the whole of television history is nora standing on the steps outside her house and preparing to defend her honour with the aid of jewelry and handbag store a broom, which she brandishes like a lance.

Now those steps are a place of pilgrimage for Last of The Summer wine fans when they visit Holmfirth, the west Yorkshire town where the series was filmed.

This scene radiates innocence. Compo, the elderly swain, is suffering from -- and profoundly enjoying -- an outbreak of puppy love.

The height of his ambition is to sit with nora in the back row of the cinema. But Compo was not only reckless in love. He lived in constant danger of death Replica Watches

Report finds TXA could be life

LONDON -- An inexpensive genetic medication that can stop bleeding in recently injured accident patients could save tens of thousands of lives worldwide, a new report says.

Researchers studied the effects of tranexamic acid (TXA) in over 10,000 adult trauma patients in 40 nations who received the drug within eight hours of being injured. They compared the patients' outcomes with those of more than 10,000 accident victims given a placebo treatment. Doctors found that patients who received TXA had a 15% lower chance of dying from a hemorrhage than those who didn't get it. They also had a 10% lower chance of dying from any other Gucci Watches cause, including organ failure and a head injury, versus patients who didn't get TXA.

The study, published online in the medical journal Lancet, was paid for by the British government.

TXA is commonly used in wealthy countries during elective surgeries to stop bleeding, but it isn't prescribed for accident victims. The drug is off-patent, and it is manufactured by many generic pharmaceutical companies. It costs about $4.50 per gram, and a typical dose is two grams. It is usually given via an injection and would be relatively easy to soccer jerseys introduce, even in poor countries, experts say.

"This is one of the cheapest ways ever to save a life," comments Ian Roberts, a professor of epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and one of the study's main investigators.

Previous tests of TXA Marni Replica Handbags examined its use in elective surgeries, such as heart operations. This was the first study that tested the drug on accident victims. Doctors were worried that TXA might increase such side effects as blood clots in the heart and lungs, strokes or heart attacks. Although there was no evidence of such complications in the study, the authors acknowledged they might have missed some of these incidents.

Byrds passing should be an opp

THE "C" stood for Carlyle, and 19th century Scottish poet Thomas Carlyle penned an appropriate verse to fit this occasion:

"Out of Eternity

This new Day is born;

Into Eternity,

At night, will return."

The tributes to Robert Carlyle Byrd, 1917-2010, are numerous and reflect for the most part a genuine love of the man.

There is much to admire about a man who came from the Depression- era backwaters of West Virginia to lead the Democrats in the U.S. Senate for 12 years.

Replica Zenith Watches

As Booker T. Washington once said: "I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed."

Both men are wisely honored at our state Capitol. There is a statue inside of the senator, and a plaque outside for the freed slave who was the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

Yet as admirable as Byrd's rise was, quite a few West Virginians - a third of the electorate in his last election - were not following where he was leading.

We, too, have a duty to state our case.

My take is that Byrd's rise to power was all about him and not his home state.

Byrd turned favors into chits and cashed them in to become first the majority whip and then the majority leader, besting Ted Kennedy.

And then he curried favor with Kennedy.

It was only after his own party rose and ousted him from power, at age 71, that Byrd assumed the role Jennings Randolph had as the procurer of federal funds for the homeland.

Byrd did well. He was always an over-achiever.

Sexy Costumes

But again, it seemed to be more about him than his constituents. A modest man would not have allowed 40 things to be named in his honor back home.

His passing provides an opportunity for change. He died in time to add his unexpired term to the offices to be decided in November's general election.

Democrat Natalie Tennant, secretary of state, ruled basically that it's too late to have a special election this year.

How convenient.

In 1958, Byrd swept into office in one of the biggest reversals in Senate fortunes in U.S. history.

Democrats gained 16 Senate seats, including both of West Virginia's.

This year could see Republicans make major gains.

Democrats do not wish to add West Virginia to the states flipping from blue to red. And so Tennant ruled out an election in November.

Her decision enhances the chances of Gov. Joe Manchin's election to the seat in 2012, which could help boost Tennant's chances for governor if that indeed is her goal.

The argument that there is no time to hold a primary is laughable. The parties have the ability to appoint candidates as well as elect them.

But that might mean a Sen. Nick Joe Rahall or Sen. John Raese seeking re-election in 2012.

Byrd staffers must sort throug

WASHINGTON - Robert C. Byrd was known for many things - his mastery of Senate rules, his oratorical skills, his ability to quote long passages of poetry from memory. At one time, he was apparently also considered quite the looker. "If you ever decide you've had enough of the Senate (which would be the country's loss) you can always model men's wear for Brooks Brothers," one female admirer wrote Byrd in April 1978. "What a super model you'd make."

Byrd's correspondent was none other than Abigail "Dear Abby" Van Buren, who wrote to Byrd, then 61, to compliment his "perfectly stunning" photograph in Time magazine.

The Dear Abby mash note is one of thousands of letters, photographs and other memorabilia that fill drawers and closets and filing cabinets in Byrd's cluttered office in the Hart Senate Office Building and his hideaway in the Capitol.

In the coming days, his staff will embark on the long task of sorting through it all to archive what is one of the largest collections in congressional history.

Lancel Bags

Staffers sorting through the files have unearthed a country music set list from Byrd's 1977 recording session at the Library of Congress (he was an accomplished fiddler), his handwritten notes on the history of the Roman Senate, countless drafts of legislation, floor speeches, videocassettes, recipes from his late wife, Erma, and mementos from every hollow of West Virginia.

By law, aides have just two months to close the office of a senator who resigns or dies in office. This week Byrd's aides received instructions from the secretary of the Senate and sergeant at arms laying out every detail of the job, including how to scan and save papers, close state offices, dispose of the office's potted plants and determine what gets shipped to West Virginia before his offices in the U.S. Capitol and Hart Building are made available to other members. (No word yet on who will get the space. The competition - especially for Byrd's Capitol digs - is likely to be fierce.)

"It's a pretty big process," said Senate Archivist Karen Paul. "We've developed checklists to help manage aspects of this. It isn't like 30 years ago when people could just put papers in a box and just ship it off."

Byrd's office declined to comment, citing the emotional toll on the senator's family and staff in the past 10 days. But Capitol Hill staffers familiar with the process of closing congressional offices describe a grueling 60 days packed with memories of their boss, mentor and friend and uncertainty about their own future.

"You're dismantling a lifetime of work," said Ray Smock, a former House historian. "You could be working very hard, and doing very well in the course of moving things around and all of seiko replica a sudden you come across a photograph and you'll pause and start to look at it, and you'll start to reflect and you're overwhelmed with emotion."

As House historian, Smock helped close several offices in the 1980s and 1990s. He's now executive director of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, which the senator established to house his records. A four-member staff has already amassed 800 cubic feet of boxes and anticipates another 2,000 cubic feet to arrive by September.

The daily grind of congressional work leaves little time for staff to think of the potential future value of a lawmaker's documents, Smock said. "That's when people like me come in," he said.
