LONDON -- An inexpensive genetic medication that can stop bleeding in recently injured accident patients could save tens of thousands of lives worldwide, a new report says.
Researchers studied the effects of tranexamic acid (TXA) in over 10,000 adult trauma patients in 40 nations who received the drug within eight hours of being injured. They compared the patients' outcomes with those of more than 10,000 accident victims given a placebo treatment. Doctors found that patients who received TXA had a 15% lower chance of dying from a hemorrhage than those who didn't get it. They also had a 10% lower chance of dying from any other Gucci Watches cause, including organ failure and a head injury, versus patients who didn't get TXA.
The study, published online in the medical journal Lancet, was paid for by the British government.
TXA is commonly used in wealthy countries during elective surgeries to stop bleeding, but it isn't prescribed for accident victims. The drug is off-patent, and it is manufactured by many generic pharmaceutical companies. It costs about $4.50 per gram, and a typical dose is two grams. It is usually given via an injection and would be relatively easy to soccer jerseys introduce, even in poor countries, experts say.
"This is one of the cheapest ways ever to save a life," comments Ian Roberts, a professor of epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and one of the study's main investigators.
Previous tests of TXA Marni Replica Handbags examined its use in elective surgeries, such as heart operations. This was the first study that tested the drug on accident victims. Doctors were worried that TXA might increase such side effects as blood clots in the heart and lungs, strokes or heart attacks. Although there was no evidence of such complications in the study, the authors acknowledged they might have missed some of these incidents.
