Mainland hosts have world cup

AUCKLAND MAY consider itself party central for next year's Accutron Watches Rugby World Cup but canny South Island property owners have their own plans to cash in on the tournament.

Despite the South Island securing only one quarterfinal there is high demand for accommodation in the Mainland. Some owners expect to fetch more than $1200 a night for their homes over the course of the competition.

A three-bedroom townhouse in Christchurch, opposite AMI Stadium, is being offered for $750 a night on the website, 80-Minute Game. The owners of a waterfront property in Sumner are asking $500 to $1250 a night. In the central city a small apartment is being offered for $400 a night. In Nelson, rentals for properties range from a comparatively cheap $120 to $500 a night.

Sue Robinson, who along with her husband Paul runs the 80-Minute Game website, said there was strong international demand for accommodation throughout the South Island, both from fans who wanted to base themselves in one wholesale lingerie spot for the duration of the tournament and from those who wanted to experience as much as possible of the country while here.

"We're getting inquiries from people wanting everything from one night's accommodation to those who want to book out a place for 35 nights," she said.

For those thinking about renting out their homes for the Rugby World Cup, Inland Revenue has a simple message: any rental income is taxable.
