Blades are Scotland's most use

KNIVES and other sharp instruments were the most commonly used murder weapons in Scotland in the last two years, according to figures released yesterday.

Blades, including knives and swords, were used to attack 58% of victims in 2008-9, up from 48% the previous year.

Hitting and kicking someone to death was the method used against 10% of victims, and 8% were either poisoned or struck with a blunt instrument, the study said.

The figures released by the Scottish Government also revealed the number of Sexy Leather Lingerie murders in Scotland fell by more than 15% last year and that more than a third of the perpetrators were on drink or drugs at the time.

The accused were mostly men aged 16 to 30. Of the 96 victims where an accused has been identified, 84% were killed by someone known to them.

Strathclyde had 59 homicide cases in 2008-9.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, Head of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, said: "We need to change our attitude to alcohol.

"While alcohol itself does not make people violent, it lowers inhibitions, so people are more likely to take risks that lead to them becoming a victim or an offender."

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: "Hand in hand with action on alcohol we are taking tough measures against those who carry and use knives. Jail terms for knife-carrying have increased by a third."
