TROY -- A sampling of more than three decades of the Troy Strawberry Festival from photos to posters, a replica of the queens' float and items Replica Chanel Watches reflecting each year's theme and logo adds a new twist to the 2010 festival.

The exhibit "Troy Strawberry Festival: History & Artifacts" is on display through June 20 at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center on West Main Street near the Public Square.

Although new in 2010, the exhibit has been in the works for a number of years, said Sally Riechert, display coordinator and 2002 festival chairwoman.

The exhibit goes from the birth of the festival in 1977 -- when the abundance of strawberries at Fulton Farms just east of Troy helped berries beat out a potential corn theme -- to the addition of the popular Saturday morning parade in 1980 -- to today with events such as a Strawberry Idol talent competition.

Each past festival chair was asked to provide a comment for the display and "something they felt was important to them" from their festival experiences. "We had so much that we could not display it all," Riechert said. "I learned a lot researching this the past two years."

The Hayner center is located across the Great Miami River from the festival's main site on the river levee between the Adams and North Market Street bridges.

Activities kick off this Friday night, June 4, with events including bed races downtown, followed by the festival featuring booths operated by local civic organizations, arts and crafts and an array of activities from a 10K run to a pie-eating contest on Saturday and Sunday.

Pappas, whose wife, Becky, was 2009 festival chairwoman, said having a veteran festival chair in the house has been a plus. "She has been helpful making sure I stay on task," he said, noting Becky was busy with her own duties as director of the festival soccer tournament.

For festival weekend, Pappas said he is looking forward to "a really nice parade" with a large contingent of Shrine groups, and the return of fire fighter's waterball on the river flood plain.
