Pupils raise St Petroc's colou

SCHOOLCHILDREN from two towns celebrated St Petroc's Day in a colourful procession through Bodmin.

More than 500 children and adults took part in the event, including 30 pupils from Padstow primary school.

Led by the trumpet and cornet players of Bodmin St Petroc's primary school's Year 5 brass band, children carried banners, flags and little windmills they had made as they paraded to decorate St Petroc's Well, before a short service was held in the parish church. A replica casket of the saint's bones by four pupils dressed in monk's habits, and the day ended with singing and dancing on Mount Folly.

It was the third year St Petroc's Day had been celebrated by children in this way.

Petroc arrived in sexy lingerie Cornwall by sea near Trebetherick around AD600, gave his name to Padstow (Petroc's-stow) and was the founder of Bodmin, which remained the religious capital of Cornwall up until the end of the Middle Ages.

The casket containing his bones was stolen from Bodmin Priory in 1177 and taken to Brittany, but were returned a short time later.

In 1994, thieves broke into St Petroc's and stole the relics again. After local and national publicity, the casket was returned after it was discovered in a field in Yorkshire.
