Japan builds replica of ancient envoy ship for Expo

NANJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Japan has built a replica of the ancient ship used to transport Japanese diplomats to China during the prosperous Tang Dynasty for the upcoming Shanghai Expo, the shipbuilder said Tuesday.

The ship, financed by a Japanese company, was built by the Chinese Changming Shipbuilding Co. in Zhangjiagang City, in eastern China's Jiangsu Province.

The wooden ship, 33.6 meters long and 9.2 meters wide, was delivered to Japan's Osaka City Friday.

The ship in May will sail part of the route the ancient envoy ship sailed, the company said.

It will arrive in Shanghai on June 11 for the Expo's "Japan Week" (June 13-18), during which time it will take passengers on cruises along the Huangpu River.
